The Short Answer

A car that has been in floodwater usually has electrical, mechanical and interior damage that costs more to repair than the car is worth. If you carried comprehensive coverage, your insurer may declare it a total loss and take it. If you carried only liability coverage, the damage is yours, and selling the car for junk is often the most practical option. Either way, the car should be sold to a buyer that reports it, so it does not resurface as a used car with a hidden history.

Both of our service areas have seen major flooding, from Superstorm Sandy and Ida in New Jersey to tropical storms and hurricanes in South Florida. Call (561) 203-8970 in Florida or (732) 709-7989 in New Jersey for an offer.

Does Insurance Cover a Flooded Car?

The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance explains the rule in its guidance on storm-related insurance claims: flood damage is covered under an auto policy’s optional comprehensive coverage, and an owner with only liability coverage will not be covered for flood damage to the vehicle. The same principle applies in Florida, where comprehensive coverage is optional.

If your insurer pays a total-loss claim, the insurer typically takes the vehicle and the title is branded as salvage. If you keep the car or had no comprehensive coverage, you can sell it for junk yourself.

Salvage Titles and Flood Brands

In New Jersey, a vehicle declared a total loss is transferred only by a salvage certificate of title, as our New Jersey title guide explains. In Florida, an insurance total loss is handled through FLHSMV’s salvage procedures. When a licensed buyer purchases a flood car, it reports the vehicle to NMVTIS, the federal title database, which helps keep the flood history attached to the VIN.

Why Flood Cars Are a Fraud Risk

After major storms, flooded vehicles are sometimes dried out, cleaned up and sold to buyers who do not know their history, sometimes after being moved to another state to obtain a clean title. This is a form of the title washing described in our NMVTIS guide. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) offers a free VINCheck lookup and has warned after storms that thousands of flood-damaged vehicles may appear for sale. Selling your flooded car to a licensed, reporting buyer keeps it out of that market and protects you if the vehicle is ever misrepresented later.

Before You Sell a Flooded Car

  • Do not try to start the engine; water in the cylinders can cause further damage.
  • Photograph the waterline and interior for your records and any insurance claim.
  • Check with your insurer before selling, if you have comprehensive coverage.
  • Remove your plate and follow the steps in our guide on plates and insurance after the sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my insurance pay for a flooded car?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance states that liability-only policies do not cover flood damage to the vehicle.

Do you buy flood-damaged cars?

Yes. We buy flooded vehicles in Palm Beach County and in our New Jersey service area. Tell us about the water damage when you request a quote so the offer is accurate.

How many cars were damaged in recent hurricanes?

Government agencies have not published official counts for recent storms. Widely quoted figures come from private vehicle-history companies, and we do not cite them here.

Can a flood car be resold as a used car?

It can be, which is why flood fraud exists. Selling to a buyer that reports the vehicle to NMVTIS helps keep its history attached to the VIN.
